For a country with a little over 11 million inhabitants, Cuba continually excels in the arena of sports: Cuba placed 5th in the Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992, placed 8th in the Olympics in Atlanta 1996, won numerous Gold medals in the Pan-American Games and placed 8th at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Cuba claims to be the country of origin of baseball. Since 1920, Cuba has been a much sought after resource for professional baseball players. Even today, stars of the Cuban National baseball team defect to the USA to play in the USA Major leagues. Jose Contreras signed a $32 million dollar, four year stint with the New York Yankees on December 24, 2002, only a few months after defecting from Cuba.

Recreational travel to Cuba is not allowed for USA citizens or permanent residents. When the USA Embargo against Cuba is lifted, the following sports activities will be available:

Golf
Bass fishing
Deep sea fishing
Scuba diving
Hunting
Biking
Hiking
deer hunting
