Agriculture | In 1900, the American Yellow Fever Commission arrived in Cuba under the leadership of Walter Reed, M.D.. The theory of mosquitoes transmitting Yellow Fever, as espoused by the great British citizen, Philadelphia (Jefferson Medical College) trained Cuban physician, Carlos Finlay was undertaken and proven to be correct. Since 1959, science in Cuba has primarily been advanced by the need for Cuba to gain "hard currency" for its national socio-economic needs. Unlike the USA, Cuba lacks the capital resources to fund "pure scientific research". In the past, Cuba has been accused of infringing upon patents of multinational pharmaceutical firms to advance Cuban biotechnology. Today, the USA is concerned about Cuba sharing its biotechnology knowledge and capabilities with hostile nations, such as Iraq and Iran. Texas Cuba offers research services regarding the current state of scientific activities in Cuba. Please contact us for more details. |
